Roofing Accessories Checklist

A complete order checklist that prevents expensive omissions and leak-prone improvisation.

The roof is a system

Sheets or tiles cover the field of the roof. Accessories protect edges, changes in direction, penetrations and drainage routes. Many failures happen because accessories are ordered late or fabricated without accurate site dimensions.

Primary weathering components

Ridge caps close the roof apex. Valley gutters collect water from intersecting slopes. Barge boards protect gable edges. Apron and sidewall flashings seal roof-to-wall junctions. Closures block wind-driven rain and pests where required.

Fixings and consumables

Use compatible screws or nails, quality washers, approved sealants, repair coatings and underlay where specified. Quantity must include the actual fixing pattern and reasonable contingency.

Rainwater management

Eaves gutters, rainwater collectors, outlets and downpipes must be treated as a calculated system. Direct water away from foundations and neighbouring properties.

Decision checklist

  • Ridge caps
  • Valley gutters
  • Barge boards
  • Apron and sidewall flashings
  • Fasteners and washers
  • Closures and sealants
  • Gutters, collectors and downpipes
  • Repair paint/stone-chip kit

Map accessories to each roof junction

Use the roof plan to identify every place where the main covering stops, changes direction or meets another element. Ridges and hips close external intersections; valleys collect water at internal intersections; barge/verge details close gable edges; apron and sidewall flashings protect wall junctions; fasteners connect the covering to supports; and gutters/downpipes control runoff. Proprietary stone-coated systems may also have profile-specific trims and fixing components. An accessory checklist built from roof geometry is more reliable than adding a percentage to the sheet cost.

  • Ridges and hip caps
  • Valley trays/channels
  • Barge/verge/eaves details
  • Wall and penetration flashings
  • Compatible fasteners and washers
  • Gutters, outlets, downpipes and collectors

Specify compatibility, not just quantity

A screw, flashing or ridge that is the correct colour may still be wrong for the roof system. Confirm material compatibility, dimensions, fixing method and profile fit. On an existing roof, replacement accessories may need to match weathered material and old geometry rather than a current catalogue image. For new projects, order the accessories with the primary covering where practical and reconcile them against the final take-off before installation. This reduces site improvisation, delays and mismatched details.

Technical note: Final roof selection and installation must follow project-specific structural, drainage and manufacturer requirements. Verify all dimensions and batch specifications before ordering.
